Daniel Day-Lewis openly retired from acting after starring in Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread. The actor is known for his extreme style of method acting which takes such a hold of his life that he has to go into intense therapy after a role. I always figured that was a big reason for him to retire: he simply couldn't sustain that level of commitment and energy anymore. Despite his three Oscars for Best Actor, the actor may have reached his breaking point.
Daniel Day-Lewis released a statement about his retirement and he said he did so to hold himself - and all of Hollywood - accountable. He told the press that he wanted to "draw a line" to make plans to fully exit out of Hollywood. He added, "I didn't want to get sucked back into another project." That's practical, but several of us who know how the acting bug works wondered whether or not that was even possible.
Why would Daniel Day-Lewis return to acting?
It turns out that he would return to acting if the film was his son's movie. It's a family affair this time around! His son Ronan Day-Lewis is going to make his directorial debut with his screenplay Anemone which was co-written by his father. The film sounds quite personal as it explores familial bonds between men in the family: fathers, sons, and brothers.
