Experimental in structure and technique but true-to-life in its depiction of drug addiction’s downward spiral, Requiem for a Dream (2000) is an exercise in the poetry of self-inflicted doom. Director Darren Aronofsky has taken Hubert Selby Jr.'s harrowing novel and given it a visual life that is every bit as gritty and dark as Selby’s original visions. The film stars Ellen Burstyn as Sara Goldfarb, an old lady who lives with her heroin addict son Harry (Jared Leto), Harry's girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly) and their friend hoodrat friend Tyrone (Marlon Wayans). All three are obsessed with getting their next score, while Sara's obsessed with a TV game show she spends all day watching. When she thinks there's a chance for her to get on the show, she starts taking speed pills to lose weight. Soon enough, she's addicted but not as addicted as the others are. In their quest to get high, Marion starts doing sex work, Harry and Tyrone team up to try and get into the drug selling game to get their fix, and Harry is so addicted to horse that he ends up with a gangrenous arm he's still trying to shoot up in! A movie about the dangers of drug abuse could've come off as cheesy, but this terrifying flick will scare you straight! But not that kind of straight! If you're looking to wreck your pants with a wet dream, take a look at the scene when screen legend Keith David speaks to Jennifer Connelly totally naked, showing his chest and buns when he turns around and walks away. We don't want to shoot up, just to shoot a load into that thing! Meanwhile, Marlon Wayans flashes ass jumping into bed with a beautiful woman. A good bone's as good as methadone! Put down the smack and smack that ass! Requiem for a Dream will make you cream!
